Luke 21: 5-11
Then, Now and Things to Come
5 Some of his disciples were remarking about how the temple was adorned with beautiful stones and with gifts dedicated to God.
This temple was the center of Jewish life for almost a thousand years and was originally rebuilt by Zerubbabel and Ezra (Ezra 6:15), but was greatly expanded and improved by Herod.
Herod’s rebuilding work started in 19 B.C., and was completed in 63 a.d. taking more than eighty years. It was finished only seven years before it was destroyed.
The temple area was 40 acres the temple itself was huge – nearly 500 yards long and 400 yards wide the internal height over 90 feet.
The stones of the temple were massive up to 500 tons Forty-eight feet long, eighteen feet thick, and eight to ten feet high. They were cut from a quarry outside of Jerusalem and then transported there.
The temple wasn’t just big, it was also beautiful. The temple was covered on the outside with gold plates that were so brilliant that when the sun shone on them it was blinding to look at. Where there was no gold, there were blocks of marble of such a pure white that strangers, from a distance, thought there was snow on the temple.
But Jesus said, 6 “As for what you see here, the time will come when not one stone will be left on another; every one of them will be thrown down.” 7 “Teacher,” they asked, “when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are about to take place?”
Every body wants to know the future
Prophesy in the scriptures needs to be studied as if you were looking at a mountain range from a distance but taking note of the peaks and valleys.
There is always time spaces between the peaks that are seen and recorded
Prophesy is 1/3 of the scriptures and with prophesy comes hope of a savior and His fulfilled promises. 1 Tim 4 we have fixed our hope on the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of believers. 1 Tim 4:10 NASB
Prophesy brings comfort 1 Cor 14 everyone who prophesies speaks to men for their strengthening, encouragement and comfort. 1 Cor 14:3 NIV
Prophesy brings conviction for service to the Lord as we look at these coming verses here in Luke 21 and the passages in Matthew chapters 23 & 24 we should be driven to share the gospel of Jesus Christ!
As impossible as it must have seemed to those hearing Jesus’ statement, just a mere 40 years after Jesus said this; there was a widespread Jewish revolution against the Romans in Palestine but ultimately Rome crushed the rebels in 70 A.D.
It is said that at the fall of Jerusalem the last surviving Jews of the city fled to the temple, because it was the strongest, most secure building in the city.
Legend has it that as Roman soldiers surrounded it one drunken soldier started a fire that soon engulfed the whole building.
This, in turn, caused all of the gold to melt into the cracks of the huge stones. After it had cooled, the soldiers pulled down every single stone to get the hardened gold—just as Jesus had prophesied the destruction was so complete that today they have difficulty learning exactly where the temple was.
Because it was the Jews who required a sign Jesus’ answer; known as the Olivet Discourse, this teaching related specifically to the Jew within their relevant life span. He will tell them about the fate of the temple, but also about events in the distant future concerning the fate of the whole world just as He predicts that the temple would be destroyed deliberately
Matthew also tells us that they asked Him, “And what will be the sign of Your coming, and the end of the age?” Matthew 24:3 They really thought that they were asking for one set of signs. They thought that when the temple was destroyed, it would be the end of the age.
In reality, there was to be a space of time between the two events. And we know that that space of time has now been over 2000 years so far since the destruction of the temple and the coming again of Jesus Christ.
Jesus first of all began to give them sort of general signs but then He becomes specific.
8 He replied: “Watch out that you are not deceived. For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am he,’ and, ‘The time is near.’ Do not follow them
For years, people wondered who would have the audacity to claim deity. But in our day of New Age philosophy & the advanced teaching of Mormonism it is no wonder people walk along the beach with outstretched arms saying, “I am God.”
Jesus knew that many would arise more than willing to assume the role of a political messiah for Israel. One example of this was a man named Bar Kokhba who 100 years after Jesus was considered by many Jews to be the Messiah; started a widespread revolution against the Romans but was soon crushed.
There will be those today who are still claiming that they are the Messiah. They’ll claim that they’re going to bring in God’s new order on earth… There are even religious groups like the Federal Order of Churches that are doing that. But Jesus said don’t go after them.
In recent years Psychiatrists have been treating what they call the False Messiah Syndrome u-tube
We should learn from History that people who rejected Jesus when He came to them as Messiah ended up falling for false messiahs who led them into nothing but death and destruction both physically and eternally.
The same is happening today with people who reject the facts about Jesus Christ.
Because of that they are experiencing the pain of spiritual death now but also the coming eternal spiritual death is in their future!
It is of utmost importance that we stand on and understand the truth of who Jesus Christ really is or we may fall for anything.
9 When you hear of wars and revolutions, do not be frightened. These things must happen first, but the end will not come right away.”
INTERESTING FACT! Historians have found that throughout the history of man, we’ve had eighteen years of some kind of war to every one year of peace. It seems like there is always conflict going on somewhere in the world as men lusting for power and they begin to fight against others. And Jesus said these things are not the signs of the end.
10 Then he said to them: “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.
There will be nations that will join together in a confederacy against groups of other nations gathering before the battle of Armageddon.
We have seen this happen two times in just this past century known as World War 1 & 2.
Today with Jerusalem being surrounded by Muslim nations and bonded by the Muslim brotherhood and with little support from other nations the stage is set for the playing out of the prophesies of Ezekiel 38,39, and Daniel 11
11 There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven.
History repeating itself is true but the events seem to escalate in severity every time.
Concerning the time Jesus first makes this statement all these things preceded the destruction of Jerusalem
Were there wars? The Romans were frequently at war with the Jews, the Samaritans, the Syrians, and others during this period. Were there earthquakes? Historians tell us of great earthquakes in the Roman Empire before Jerusalem was destroyed. Were there famines? Acts 11:28 tells of one in this period that happened during the reign of Claudius. (During the siege and fall of Jerusalem people were eating children) Were there fearful sights? Mount Vesuvius, a volcano near the Bay of Naples part of the Roman empire, erupted more than 50 times. Its most famous eruption took place in the year 79 A.D. destroying Pompeii
Were there signs in the heavens? Not long before Jerusalem was destroyed Josephus mentions a comet that looked like a sword hung over the city by night for a year and eclipses co-insiding with different events
The world has seen incredible catastrophe since the time of Jesus. Even in our century we have seen genocide on an unimaginable scale, world wide war, and whole continents given over to disease and famine. These famines, pestilences, earthquakes and great signs in the heavens yet these things in themselves are not the signs of Jesus’ coming. What we are now seeing are precursors to these they are not complete fulfillment.
It is just a foreshadowing of what’s going to come and it’s a small foreshadowing.
2 Peter 3:3-7 First of all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised? Ever since our fathers died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.” But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word the heavens existed and the earth was formed out of water and by water. By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed. By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men. 2 Peter 3:3-7 NIV
During the great tribulation, there is going to be horrible famines upon the earth. In the book of Revelation 6:5-6 When the Lamb opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, “Come!” I looked, and there before me was a black horse! Its rider was holding a pair of scales in his hand. Then I heard what sounded like a voice among the four living creatures, saying, “A quart of wheat for a day’s wages, and three quarts of barley for a day’s wages, and do not damage the oil and the wine!”
Whatever the average wage is for a day’s labor will equal the price for a quart of wheat or three quarts of barley. So there will be tremendously inflated prices because of the shortage of food.
According to the UN specialized agencies of Food and Agriculture, as recent as this year the combination of food and economic crisis has caused the number of hungry in the world exceeds one billion. This is the worst record in forty years.
The same with earthquakes Records show that in 1970 there were recorded world wide 1325 quakes measuring between 5.0 and above & recent as 2012 shows an increase to 2481 quakes. But that’s nothing compared to what’s going to come as the scripture prophesies of some really horrendous earthquakes that will shake the whole world and will be tied with signs in the heavens.
Rev 6:12-14 I watched as he opened the sixth seal. There was a great earthquake. The sun turned black like sackcloth made of goat hair, the whole moon turned blood red, and the stars in the sky fell to earth, as late figs drop from a fig tree when shaken by a strong wind. The sky receded like a scroll, rolling up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place. Rev 6:12-14 NIV

Then there is the word “pestilence” refers to any epidemic outbreak of a deadly and highly infectious or incurable disease.
Certainly we have seen increased pestilences in the past decades. We are coming up against some exotic germs & viruses. They have mutated to where they are resistant or impervious to the drugs that we have generally used in fighting them.
Today the panic buzz word is pandemic is a virus or disease prevalent throughout an entire country, continent, or the whole world; A pandemic occurs when a new subtype of virus arises and humans have little or no immunity to it and puts everyone is at risk. HIV/AIDS is an example of one of the most destructive global pandemics in history. Tuberculosis is back on the radar. A virus subtype H1N1 of 2009 bird flu has now moved to Avian influenza (H5N1) and is even more powerful! There is the SARS pandemic of 2003 that is now mutating again.
And that’s only a foreshadowing of what is to take place during the great tribulation. Rev 6:7-8 When the Lamb opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature say, “Come!” 8 I looked, and there before me was a pale horse! Its rider was named Death, and Hades was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine and plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth.
This is the time known as the great tribulation where the wrath of God is poured out on mankind who have refused to ask Jesus Christ to be their savior
For those who know Christ as savior will be removed from the face of the earth before the 2nd coming of Jesus Christ according to the Bible in 1 Thess 4 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. 1 Thess 4:16-17 NIV
There is one more fatal disease that has been a pandemic since Genesis chapter 3 and is referred to many times as RMS.3:23 and is the rebellion against God by all mankind all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, you see it has been researched, studied, and confirmed that sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned- Rom 5:12 NIV
But the good news is that there is a cure; For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners,(Adam) so also through the obedience of the one man (Jesus Christ) many will be made righteous. Rom 5:19 NIV
The cure is provided
You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly for God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since we have now been justified (cured) by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him!
Rom 5:6-9 NIV
The cure must be acted upon
For salvation (the cure) comes from trusting Christ- in fact, it is as near as our own hearts and mouths. For if you tell others with your own mouth that Jesus Christ is your Lord and believe in your own heart that God has raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
For it is by believing in his heart that a man commits his life to Christ and becomes right with God; and with his mouth he tells others of his faith, confirming his salvation.
